Have You Ever Been Offended by a Movie?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

In conjunction with the most recent trailer for the George W. Bush movie W, Yahoo! Movies has put together a list of the five most controversial movies of the past decade. They include:

  • The Passion of the Christ (2004)
  • Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
  • The Brown Bunny (2004)
  • Brokeback Mountain (2005)
  • The DaVinci Code (2006)

I know that these movies offended plenty of people, for a variety of reasons. Have you ever been offended by these movies or any others?

What to Download: New Music on iTunes

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Tuesdays are big in entertainmentville: Not only do all the new DVD releases hit Netflix, but new music also pours into stores, including iTunes. So I take a spin through each week’s iTunes music releases and pick out some albums and tracks worthy of a download. In addition to the songs and albums below, you can now download the Mad Men soundtrack and Jennifer Hudson’s self-titled new album.

Foul-mouthed piano man: I’ve been patiently waiting for the new Ben Folds album, and so far, it sounds like everything I expected from the weirdo songwriter. A lot of the lyrics are dark in subject matter, and I like the tracks focused on relationships most, including his duet with Regina Spektor, “You Don’t Know Me,” as well as “Before Cologne” and “Cologne.”

Soul singing: I am such a sucker for pretty, romantic, soulful tunes, and James Morrison, a singer from across the pond, delivers just that. Off his new album, I like, “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me,” “Love is Hard,” and “You Make It Real.” Maybe it’s just the name, but he sort of reminds me of a young Van Morrison.

One more release still to come, so

The Results Are In: Recast Forrest Gump

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Every other Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie. The reader who submits the best cast wins a BuzzSugar T-shirt!

You guys chipped in a lot of different ideas for this one, even though it’s hard to imagine any other actors in this cast. I think the hardest role — and the most important, of course — is Forrest. It takes a special kind of actor to pull off this role in a charming and relatable way. I absolutely love jasmint’s idea of Lee Pace, and I thought bigestivediscuit’s Adam Sandler idea showed some good thinking.

Jenny’s a tough one to replace, too, since the actress has to be believable as a teenager through to adulthood. Several of you suggested Sienna Miller which definitely captures the free-spirited side of the character. I also think Whip is right on the money with Reese Witherspoon, especially since we know she can nail that accent.

As for the other characters: khowell’s idea of Matthew Fox to play Lt. Dan is cool, I agree with littlesnipsnap that a younger Forest Whitaker would make a great Bubba, and can’t argue with paperdoll’s suggestion for Forrest’s mom, Susan Sarandon.

For the winner, I chose a recast list with good suggestions throughout — especially for Forrest and Lt. Dan. Congrats to alethe16!

To see who alethe16 chose, along with a new cast photo,

Chuck Rundown: Episode One, “Chuck vs. the First Date”

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

First date? Yup. This episode of Chuck kicked off the season with Chuck attempting to develop a normal relationship with Sarah, i.e. one that wouldn’t involve guns at every dinner. Chuck’s not supposed to be the Intersect anymore, after all, so why shouldn’t he get a little non-threatening-to-national-security love? Of course, that’s not quite how things work out, as we learn when we see Chuck being dangled by his ankles off the side of a building in the first few minutes of the episode. I laughed a lot at this one, so to talk about it, just

Movie Preview: Madonna’s Filth and Wisdom

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

So, Madonna directed an indie movie, Filth and Wisdom (”they are two sides of the same coin”). The trailer is narrated by the main character, a Ukrainian man named A.K. (Eugene Hutz, frontman of gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello), who “finances his dreams of rock glory by moonlighting as a cross-dressing dominatrix.” The movie follows A.K. and his two female flatmates: “Holly (Holly Weston), a ballet dancer who works as a stripper and pole dancer at a local club and Juliette (Vicky McClure), a pharmacy assistant who dreams of going to Africa to help starving children.”

All I know is that the music is by Gogol Bordello, so that aspect is probably great.

Maybe the characters seem more likable in the actual movie. But then again, I’m not totally sure I’m interested enough to go see the full movie when it comes out Oct. 17. What do you think? You can check out the trailer if you
