Movie Preview: New Transformers 2 Trailer

OK, folks, prepare yourself for another look at Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The first trailer was full of explosions, but this time around, we get a look at more of what you might call “the plot,” with Sam heading off to college and starting to see creepy symbols in the middle of lectures.

That said, there are still explosions. There’s Megan Fox being hot. There’s Shia LaBeouf being intense – and understandably so, since big, scary robots seem to want something that’s physically inside his brain. It’s about what you’d expect from this franchise, I’d say. The movie hits theaters June 24, and to watch the new trailer, just read more.

Have You Been Missing Conan O’Brien?

It wasn’t until I saw this new logo for The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien that I truly realized how close we are to getting Conan back on the air. His last Late Night aired way back in February, making way for Jimmy Fallon’s version, and now his own transition to The Tonight Show is just about a month away.

All of that got me thinking: Has it been hard to get through these months of late-night TV without Conan O’Brien’s goofy humor in the mix? Or have we adapted just fine to life without him?

Matt Giraud: “I’m Not Kicking Myself Because I’m Not Winning”

The judges saved Matt Giraud once, but nothing could keep him from going home in fifth place on American Idol on Wednesday. Just a few hours later, the latest eliminee hopped on the phone with reporters to discuss his comparisons to Justin Timberlake, his musical goals, and getting the first-ever judges’ save. Here are highlights:

  • On his historic save: “I can’t wait to see my name on a trivia card. I feel blessed, honored, and you know what? Being saved, I never felt so much love in a room before. I think it was one of the coolest moments in my life . . . I really didn’t know people felt that passionately about me. Even one of the security guards told me he’d never heard the room get so loud.”
  • On whether he thinks the save should come back next season: “Yeah, for sure. It’s a great thing. I don’t think it was a waste of time at all, because it shows people that the judges can see something in someone.”
  • On what he would have done if he’d had to choose between the two groups on the elimination show: “I would have pulled an Archuleta and just sat down.”
  • On how he envisions his musical career: “I’d actually like to get more into the rock, or some soulful rock, maybe a twist of blues on it. I’d love to see myself as a lead man with a piano and a band around me, touring and doing good music, maybe like the likes of Gavin DeGraw and The Fray.”
  • On getting criticism from the judges when he performed exactly those sorts of songs: “I still picked the songs even if they were more rock-y. I still picked them if they moved me and I loved singing them. At the end of the day, I’m not going to change what I like . . . I got tons of emails and comments about those songs from fans saying that they loved them, so that kind of reassured me a little bit.”

  • On the constant comparisons to Justin Timberlake: “[The comparisons are] a little bit annoying. But the thing is, I respect him a lot, and I really appreciate what he does and I knew – a white guy with soul, that’s just how it works. I was waiting for that to come. But I think what I do is a lot different. I love his type of music, I can pull it off, but it’s not really where I want to go musically.”
  • On getting praise from Simon Cowell for his final performance: “It was a great way to go out – because going out with Simon calling you brilliant and comparing you to Nat King Cole is pretty much the best way I could go.”
  • On his most memorable experiences in the Idol house: “Doing dueling pianos with Scott [MacIntyre] in the basement was pretty memorable. We had two keyboards, and we’d go down there and just go at it at, like, midnight.”
  • On how he decided when to play piano: “It might seem like there was some strategy going on, but it was more just kind of on the whim. I kind of planned on playing this next week if I made it through. I didn’t want to overdo it, because piano doesn’t really help you on the show – it’s more like a prop.”
  • On what would have been his pick for next week’s rock theme: “I actually thought about doing ‘Simple Man’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd on the keys and making it a bluesy version.”
  • On his reaction to being so close, yet so far, from winning: “I’m not kicking myself because I’m not winning. Obviously, we’ve seen past Idols who go home in fourth or fifth place and do even better than the Idols who’ve won, so all hope is not lost.”

America’s Next Top Model Quiz: “Let’s Go See The City”

Don’t we seem to be learning a lot more about the harsh realities of the modeling world during this cycle of America’s Next Top Model? Normally it’s all “Smile with your eyes!” and “Be ugly but pretty!” which can make some contestants feel bad when they can’t master it. But now even I’m starting to feel bad (and old and short)!

For example, Celia is being treated like she should be wearing Depends because she’s 25. Seriously, anytime anyone had anything to say about Celia on this episode, it had to do with what an old lady she is – at 25. And the way they talk about Fo, you’d think she’s a little person – apparently, she’s way too short to be a model, even though she must have been at least 5’7″ to try out.

Anyway, teeny bikinis that force producers to pixelate model-butt plus Nigel as the photographer equals a good episode in my book. You can see the rest of the pictures from this episode and test your beauty recall, but first, take my quiz!

Amy Brenneman Says Violet’s Baby Is in Danger Tonight

In general, babies don’t have the easiest time at Private Practice‘s Oceanside Wellness. So will Violet’s baby survive tonight’s season finale? My recent chat with Amy Brenneman confirmed there’s some merit to the question.

It’s been rumored that Violet’s mentally unstable patient, Katie, will return tonight, blaming Violet for her own unsuccessful pregnancy and seeking revenge. Meanwhile, we still don’t know if Pete or Sheldon is the father – nor do we know if Violet will accept Sheldon’s marriage proposal. Lots of questions for just one hour!

I asked Brenneman what the heck Violet sees in Sheldon, why Violet lacks female friends, and lots more. Here are highlights:

Let’s start with the big proposal. I feel lukewarm on Sheldon. What does Violet see in him?
Sheldon really understands her, and I kind of like that storyline in that last episode of them working on a case together. Because I do think that for as kind of sloppy and messy as Violet is, she still has a really inquisitive mind about psychology – both hers and other people’s – so I think there’s something really comforting to her about Sheldon’s familiarity with that subject too. I think he adores her, and I think Violet knows that. What [creator] Shonda Rhimes basically said to me was – and you know this is a little black and white – but that Sheldon is the safe guy in that he has been very steady with his affection and she knows he’ll probably never go away. Pete, even though [Violet's] known him longer, the idea is that [she's] seen him through bad behavior so . . . can she really trust in Pete?

Do you personally have a preference for which guy Violet chooses, if any?
You know, not really. I mean, I love both these men. Brian Benben [Sheldon] makes me laugh all day long. And I think with Tim [Daly] – you know what’s so brilliant about Shonda putting me and him together is because I worked with his sister [Tyne Daly] for 10 years . . . he’s very familiar to me. At first it was like “Ew! It’s going to be like kissing my brother!” He’s gorgeous and he’s great, but yeah, Shonda’s like, “Well, yeah, that’s kind of what I want to explore with Violet and Pete,” because they’ve known each other a long time and then it turns into a sexual relationship, and what is that like? Then, you know, for Violet, too, there’s the whole Coop factor. . . . Still at this point in her life the real day-to-day guy to see is Cooper.

To hear about Violet’s friendships and what’s happening with her baby, just read more.

Do you ever wish Violet had more girlfriends?
Yeah! I do. I do. Sometimes I don’t know if certain things are deliberate or if we don’t have time to tell every story that we’d like to tell, because that’s something we explored a little bit at the very beginning of the season with my friendship with Naomi. Because during the very first season . . . I kept saying to Shonda, “Wait a minute. You know, Naomi might be happy that Addison’s there because she’s great and adorable, but Violet’s world is kind of rocked.” Addison comes to town and because she has the older relationship with Naomi, Violet just kind of gets tossed aside. But I think that it’s interesting with [Violet's] history, you know the fact that she was raped in the past. In one way, I think these men really protect her and really love her, and that’s a safe place for her.

Will she and Charlotte get closer?
Well, I think that’s a situational thing. I mean, they’re literally sort of on the same couch together, you know? But I think that Charlotte is trying to be generous. I don’t know. I have no idea what’s planned. I find it really hard to believe. Charlotte’s just so weird! I mean, even watching her behavior with Cooper . . . they get close and she’s just such a little nervous thing. I think there’s genuine love that we both have for Cooper.

Is Violet annoyed that Coop and Charlotte have so much sex around her while she’s pregnant?
Totally! Oh, totally. No, I think everyone’s annoyed, and Cooper’s trying to be the good guy. I mean, I think that’s something that Shonda writes about a lot: How do sexuality and intimacy go together? How do intimacy and fantasy go together?

Babies on Private Practice don’t fare too well. Is Violet’s baby in danger?
Violet’s baby is in a little bit of danger. I know that’s what Tim Daly always says – he’s always like, “Wow! We’re not a very good practice. We lose patients!” He always says to me, “Violet’s not a very good therapist!” But yes, that is a good observation, and, um, all I know is what you guys are going to see [tonight] but . . . yes, the baby’s in danger.

Cute Duo Join Natalie Portman in Indie Drama Hesher

To sort of steal a line from Zoolander, this casting news makes me think, “That Joseph Gordon-Levitt is so hot right now.” He’s currently the talk of the independent film town thanks to the good buzz surrounding his upcoming movie 500 Days of Summer, and he just booked a role in Christopher Nolan’s next project. Now, he and Rainn Wilson have signed up for a movie titled Hesher that already has Natalie Portman on board as a star and producer. The Hollywood Reporter classifies this flick as a dramedy, and here’s how it describes the plot:

The story centers on a loser twentysomething who invades the life of an awkward 13-year-old who is living with a pill-popping father and grandmother. Gordon-Levitt is playing the title character, a good and bad influence on the boy’s life. Wilson is the dad trying to keep his family together after the death of his wife.

Portman plays a supermarket worker the kid falls for.

First of all, I didn’t know what a “hesher” was until I looked it up online. I feel so behind the times. Also, I’m with Vulture on this point: “Dwight Schrute popping pills?! So, so wrong.” Still, this film sounds cute and totally up my alley. What say you? Are you glad to see Gordon-Levitt booking more roles?
