First Listen: Andrew Bird’s Noble Beast

Posted by Synidcated in All Gossip on January 7th, 2009 |  No Comments »

I believe a new Andrew Bird album is always something to celebrate — I even made his upcoming Noble Beast one of my entertainment must haves for the month. So when I heard that NPR was offering a free early listen to the new album, I could scarcely click in fast enough.

Noble Beast is an interesting album for Bird; his record label thinks it's the one that could make him a breakout star. I don't disagree with that; there are a few songs on here that I could even hear on the radio. But if you're a longtime Bird fan that shouldn't make you wary; the catchier songs here are among his best. My one reservation at first listen is that the album doesn't really build from his 2007 release, Armchair Apocrypha, which had a lot of tracks that just seemed to soar. Noble Beast is more restrained, maybe, but I can still see it becoming a staple in my collection, especially with some time to let the lyrics sink in. To see my first impressions of each track, just

TV Tonight: The People’s Choice Awards

Posted by Synidcated in All Gossip on January 7th, 2009 |  No Comments »

The Winter awards season kicks off bigtime this month — have you entered our Golden Globes ballot contest yet? — and Queen Latifah will be getting it all started tonight with the 35th annual People's Choice Awards on CBS.

The nominees are a typically eclectic bunch, with categories like Favorite Superhero and Favorite TV Drama Diva. This year, I'm most curious to see who wins the award for the favorite star under age 35, because those nominees covered a huge range of Hollywood stars, from Amy Adams to Zac Efron with Kanye West and Leonardo DiCaprio along the way.

Four awards are still open for voting, if you head over here. You can cast your ballot for Favorite New TV Comedy (Kath and Kim, Gary Unmarried, Worst Week) and Favorite New TV Drama (The Mentalist, 90210, Fringe) as well as vote in two newly added categories, Favorite User-Generated Video and Favorite Online Sensation (a category that spans everything from Paris Hilton's forays into politics to Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog).

The People's Choice Awards aren't the most, um, prestigious awards handed out this season, but they can still be fun. So tell me: Will you be watching tonight?

Should Popular Songs Cost More on iTunes?

Posted by Synidcated in All Gossip on January 7th, 2009 |  No Comments »

One of the announcements that caught my eye from this year's Macworld event was the change in how much iTunes music downloads will cost. Starting in April, songs will cost either 69 cents, 99 cents, or $1.29. So far, Apple's just said the songs will be priced according to what labels charge them. But there's one theory going around that the $1.29 price will apply to "the handful of the most sought-after songs," which drive the majority of iTunes sales in the first place.

On the one hand, I don't mind paying $1.29 for "Single Ladies" if it means I can download more obscure stuff for less. But on the other hand, couldn't the most popular songs be cheaper because more people will be buying them? And what happens when last year's big single isn't so popular anymore — is it $1.29 forever?

So many questions, but let's start with the basic one: Is it a good idea to charge more for popular songs?
